Film Synopsis

Dark Matter follows a research scientist who, after the tragic death of his wife, finds himself in deep alcoholic depression. When he discovers unusual genetic material in a small meteorite, he becomes consumed by the mystery of its origin. As he attempts to unravel its secrets, he inadvertently creates an alien life form and is forced to confront questions about purpose, consequence, and the unknown.

Maurice Smith envisioned the film as a "multi-layered jigsaw puzzle" designed to challenge the viewer’s perception of reality. His creative intent was to use the sci-fi genre to explore the human condition and biological fascinations, specifically how a research scientist's personal tragedy—alcoholic depression following the death of his wife—intersects with the discovery of genetic material from a meteorite. Smith aimed to portray the disorientation of grief through a narrative where the protagonist is "thrown backwards into time," creating a metaphorical link between his emotional state and the arrival of an alien life form.
